Impact of MV Standards on Shipboard DC Cable System Size

There is rising interest in medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) power systems for several reasons, including compatibility with DC loads and avoidance of alternating (AC) frequency synchronization issues when combining multiple source outputs [1]. However, few MVDC are currently operation, there relatively little experience compared to the knowledge available (MVAC) systems. Presently, IEEE Std. 1709 only standard that provides guidance [2]. This work’s objective harmonize information within MVAC standards produce prospective design test values shipboard cables evaluate their impact on cable system sizes. Standards parameters Basic Lightning Impulse Insulation Level, Withstand Voltage, insulation thickness compiled understand range parameter deemed acceptable cables. Based existing 1709, this study produces a 12 kV Nominal System Voltage. Additionally, tradeoff was identified where small reduction size can be achieved but at expense substantially greater electric stresses insulation.
